Videos of Cymatics

A simple experiment demonstrating the visualization of cymatics can be done by sprinkling sand on a metal plate and vibrating the plate, for example by drawing a violin bow along the edge, the sand will then form itself into standing wave patterns such as simple concentric circles. The higher the frequency, the more complex the shapes produced, with certain shapes having similarities to traditional mandala designs.

Cymatics in the Rosslyn Chapel

In 2007, pianist and composer Stuart Mitchell along with his father T.J. Mitchell, discovered a series of carved patterns on cubes within the Rosslyn Chapel containing hidden musical notes. Through their research and use of cymatics they were able to decipher these cubes thus composing the Rosslyn Motet. This hauntingly beautiful music can be heard throughout this video as well as on Stuart Mitchell’s website.
