How to Calculate Your Life Path Number

Your Life Path Number is calculated using only simple math addition, with 2 rules:

1. Rule 1: Group the numbers of your birthday together (day) + (month) + (year), and add each of them together singularly until you get to a single digit between 1 and 9 or a Master Number of 11 or 22.
2. Rule 2: If you have a Master Number 11 or 22 in the process you do not reduce them to single digits until the final calculation.

Sound Simple? It is!

To calculate a Life Path Number you first group the Month of your birth, the Day of your birth, and Year of you birth into individual numbers and add them together. We will go over many examples below, but to start with here is a simple starter example: The birth day of 14 becomes a 5 because you add (1 + 4) = 5.

You keep adding the numbers in a group together until they are reduced to a single number for each Month, Day and Year. You then proceed to add the groups together and continue the process until you get to a single number between 1 and 9, or one of the master numbers of 11, 22 or 33.

Example 1:

Birth Date: May 4, 1977
May = 5
4 = 4
1977 = (1 + 9 + 7 + 7) = 24 = (2 + 4) = 6

Then add the totals from each group:

(Month + Day + Year)

(5 + 4 + 6) = 15

(1 + 5) = 6

This means that a person born on May 4, 1977 is a: Life Path 6

2026 Update: After reviewing many life path numbers and working on the Life Path 33 we have to provide some further clarification. There is an alternate way to calculate the Life Path number that involves simply adding all the numbers up at one time. This makes the above Life Path 6 a Life Path 33.

Alternate Way:

(5 + 4 + 1 + 9 + 7 + 7) = 33

This Life Path 33 person will also have some of the traits of a Life Path 6 because: (3 + 3) = 6

We have updated our calculator to account for these instances of when adding all the individual numbers together equates to an 11, 22, or 33. Under most circumstances you will always come to the same result, but it reduces the chances of the 33 truly showing up. One should note these famous Life Path 33’s and their accomplishments: Albert Einstein (March 3, 1987), Francis Ford Coppola (April 7, 1939), Stephen King (September 21, 1947).

The Incorrect Way:

Incorrect Way Example: 

December, 31, 1983

(12 + 31 + 1983) = 2026

(2 + 0 + 2 + 6) = 10

(1 + 0) = 1

This way would incorrectly come up with a Life Path 1.

Now let’s look at another example, but using a birth date having double digits.

Example using 2 digit Month and Day:

Birth Date: December 21, 1954

December = 12 => (1 + 2) = 3
21 = (2 + 1) = 3
1954 => (1 + 9 + 5 + 4) = 19 => (1 + 9) = 10 => (1 + 0) = 1

(3 + 3 + 1) = 7

Using the Alternate Method:

(1 + 2 + 2 + 1 + 1 + 9 + 5 + 4) = 25

(2 + 5) = 7

This means that a person born on December 21, 1954 is a: Life Path 7 using both methods.

Next we look at the second rule. Do not reduce the two digit numbers 11, 22 or 33 (Example 1 + 1 = 2, 2 + 2 = 4, 3 + 3 = 6) if they show up in the groups during the calculation, it is only reduced in the final equation.

This is because the numbers 11, 22 and 33 are special Master Numbers in Numerology and have additional properties and meanings. We will get to this shortly.

Master Number Example 1:

Birth Date: July 29, 1974

July = 7
29 = (2 + 9) = 11 (Do Not Reduce)
1974 = (1 + 9 + 7 + 4) = 21 = (2 + 1) = 3

(7 + 11 + 3) = 21 = (2 + 1) = 3

Using the Alternate Method:

(7 + 2 + 9 + 1 + 9 + 7 + 4) = 39

(3 + 9 ) = 12

(1 + 2) = 3

This shows that a  person born on July 29, 1974 is a: Life Path 3 

Here’s another Master Number example for clarity:

Birth Date: November 29, 1975

November = 11 (Do Not Reduce)
29 = (2 + 9) = 11 (Do Not Reduce)
1975 = (1 + 9 + 7 + 5) = 22  (Do Not Reduce)
(11 + 11 + 22) = 44 = (4 + 4) = 8

Using the Alternate Method:

( 1 + 1 + 2 + 9 + 1 + 9 + 7 + 5)  = 35

(3 + 5) = 8

This shows that regardless of the method the person is still: Life Path 8  

Notes On Master Numbers

It is of great importance that we point out here that the master numbers do not signify great power, a higher evolution, or a more spiritual being. They signify that a person has the energy of one of these numbers in their make-up and can be controlled in either a positive or negative direction. People with the Life Path of either 11, 22 or 33 will tend to have great struggles that will either make them a better person through overcoming their trials and tribulations, or break them apart from the same experience.

Now we will look at what each Life Path Number Characteristics says about a person.

Each number has its own vibration and characteristics. It is similar to how a music note of C can sound very different in each instrument or octave.

The characteristics listed below are grouped under Positive and Negative, but it comes down to the person to decide how they will express those characteristics. Any characteristic can be seen as either a Constructive one, a Destructive one. For example, a Life Path 1 can be very ambitious and achieve great things for themselves and their family, or they can be overly ambitious and focus on their work and never have a care-in-the world for their own health or their family. Question: Are people with a Life Path 11 more spiritually advanced?

Answer: The Life Path Number is not an indicator of spirituality. In fact part of being a Life Path 11 does not mean everything will be great, and many 11’s have a rocky path that stretches them beyond what they once believed they were capable of.
