Sound is a wave, right? If you share this commonly held belief it is probably because everything you have ever read or been told about sound, whether from high school, popular science books or university courses, has reinforced this concept. And yet, if our eyes could see sound, we would not see waves wiggling their way through the air. Instead, we would see something quite surprising!
Vibration underpins all matter in the universe. No matter can exist without sound and vibration. To see the periodic motions that lie at the heart of matter is to lift the veils that conceal many mysteries of the universe.
When the microscope and telescope were invented they opened vistas on realms that were not even suspected to exist. The fields of biology and cosmology would have remained closed to us without these instruments.
