Often, our inner energies are forceful. Sometimes our conflicting emotions feel jus...

When I see them hanging off my house, in my dreams or visions I get very distinct and symbolic impressions. These impressions reveal deeper meaning and allow me to form a symbolic narrative - a story that expresses meaning through metaphor.

Some of these impressions are quite personal. For example, years ago, I served as a 'big sister' to Margaret, a little sprite of a girl who had trouble pronouncing the word 'icicle.' Every time she said the word it came out sounding like 'ice-giggle.' How endearing! To this day, I call them ice-giggles because icicles convey a kind of crystal-joy for me, and remind me of Margaret and her cheerful nature.

In esoteric symbolism, icicles share common symbolic threads with water. Water is esoterically symbolic of emotion, intuition, fluidity and moving in sync with the currents of life.

In a frozen state, water takes on a stoic or suspended personality. This prompts me to consider icicles as a message of stepping back from potentially torrential emotions. In other words, icicles are a reminder to be still, and channel our emotional floodgates into a more manageable flow.

Consider your own emotional status. Instead of stewing in a pool of emotional chaos, icicles convey a need to slow down, cool off, hang out, and reduce emotional flooding down to a more manageable drip-drop pace.

Speaking of pace, my predominant symboli...

Sometimes my meditative views journey through space, and my inner vision reveals the wonder of our galaxy, its constellations and beyond.

When this happens, I think back to a bit of trivia proffered from an astronomy teacher I once had. She pointed out that the stars shown on astronomical star charts and stellar maps are not represented by size. Rather, stars shown in charts of constellations and the like are conveyed by intensity of light, not by size.

So, when we see stars in an image reproduction, the bigger ones aren't necessarily bigger than all the other stars, but they are certainly brighter.

I'm hard-wired to read symbolism in almost everything, and this bit of bright trivia was a delight to my symbolic bent.

This connection reminded me that, metaphysically speaking, size doesn't really matter, at least not as much as intensity.

Have you ever felt small or ineffectual? Helpless? Or perhaps you've sometimes felt as though your actions are too small to make a difference.

Consider the astronomical technique of defining stars in our heavens. It's not the size that gets them noticed on the map, it's their intensity of brightness.

So what, big deal, right? What does this have to do with our efforts putting a dent in the world-at-large?

Plenty.

Humans are made from the same stuff as stars. In fact, my instant partiality to this website, Token Rock, was in the name and the rock-solid concepts backing TR's foundation.

So what's so special about stone symbolism? I've got ideas (of course):

Stones and Rocks are Batteries:

Yes, just like Duracell, stones are batteries storing big juju. They contain the power of the Mother (Earth) within their smooth bodies. I carry five special stones in my pocket at all times. Each one radiates with a specific memory and energy. Holding one elicits a feeling of groundedness. Another one propels me into dreamtime realms. Yet another stone is packed with protective power.

Stones are charged by the Mother (Earth), whose electric energy is undeniably clarified, vibrant and mammoth. Stones are her babies, layered with the Mother's own genetic code. We can tap into that energy and invigorate ourselves by connecting with rocks.

Stones are Memories:

Consider, rocks have been hanging around for eons. Some stones have been squatting in their moist muddy nests for thousands of years. If we apply the rule of energy (meaning, it never expires, but is always present), we can retrieve ancient recollections via stones.

Give it a try some time. Meditate with an old rock (I'm serious!), with a clear intent to cast yourself back to the time of that stone's birth. Experience the time, place and people present while you yourself observe in stoney silence. Witness yourself becoming more smooth and subdued over centuries of enduring Nature's polish. If your rock-meditations ...

That seems to be the trend of hermit crab meaning and messages.

I know, because I am the proud mamma of a colony. 11 hermit crabs live in a palatial 'crabitat' (hermit crab community) here in my studio office. That's Obe Wan Kenobi in the picture above.

We've been living with each other in happy harmony for a few months now, and their shared wisdom has been monumental in my continued evolution. I thought I'd share a bit of their insights with you.

Hermit crab meaning and symbolism includes attributes such as:

Sensory perception

Resourcefulness

Social structure

Exploration

Community

Adaptation

Patience

It may seem paradoxical to reference 'social' and 'community' in the same symbolic list with hermit crabs. After all, aren't they hermits? No, not really.

Hermit crabs crave social connection, and in their native habitats, they form colonies of 100 or more. I've had the utter pleasure of observing their social interaction. They communicate in a myriad of ways, and to my astonished delight, they even help each other out (like climbing on top of each other to get to a coveted high spot in their crabitat).

But they aren't all social sweetness. They also recognize their need for seclusion and times of social rest. A big lesson for many of us. These crabby babies remind me that community is vital, but equally vital is a time of introspective seclusion.

Their social etiquette seems largely based on perceptual communication. Rarely...

So, I thought I'd take a moment to share this Rx from Nature as an example of how we can interpret symbolic phenomenon according to our life experience.

Last Winter a Woodchuck decided to make lunch out of the wiring in my Jeep. When all the electrical gauges fritzed out on me (whilst driving, ack!), I took the Jeep to my mechanic. He saw tell-tale gnaw marks on some of the hoses and wires around the engine.

Apparently, Woodies crave salt - especially in the Winter. So, apparently, my Jeep innards offered the little guy a perfect salty snack (I live up north where salt is used to keep ice & snow manageably melted. That salt accumulates on vehicles in the Winter - tasty treats for salt-craving critters).

Of course, being predisposed to symbolism (or should I say, a bit obsessive-compulsive about interpreting symbolic meanings that crop up in life), I set to interpreting this odd-ball occurrence.

I knew that Woodchucks are natural burrowers and hoarders, so that prompted me to take stock of stuff I might be holding on to. Grudges, emotions, burrowed resentments. I got mindful about what I was harboring. I intuited the Woodchuck as a messenger encouraging me to release some things I'd been storing that no longer served me.

It didn't take too much digging for me to identify my inner stockpiles. I'd been accumulating and retaining a lot of stress at that time. In fact, I was so overwhelmed, I had paid very little attention to my level of anxiety. That industrious Woodchuck pointed my attention to how I was holding in and repressing a lot of serious unrest.

When it comes to symbolic interpretation, everything counts. I dug deeper into my contemplation and recognized my Jeep as a symbol of direction, movement and navigation (ie:...

And I'm not the only one. I've been asked about the symbolic meaning of the fly and thought a post about them might be appropriate.

Flies get a bum rap in most myths and cultural view. For example, ancient Christian lore depicts the fly as a symbol of impurity and a temptation to diverge from the path of righteousness. Phoenician myth associates Beelzebub as the 'Lord of Flies' in which the insect represents corruption and putridness. This association is why the fly is featured on some renditions of the Devil card in the Tarot, because it represents base impulses, and uncleanliness in many areas of the human collective consciousness.

Understandable. After all, the fly is a well-known carrier of viruses. But it's not like it's spreading disease on purpose, it's just a natural process.

Thankfully, not all cultural myths count the fly as a nemesis. Did you know the fly is sacred to the Greek god Zeus? Uh huh. The pervasiveness of flies was observed by the ancient Greeks to signify omnipresence. Flies are everywhere, and so too is divine presence - always watching, always buzzing with energy.

The Bamun people of Cameroon recognize flies as an energetic kingdom of tiny winged insects and their presence signified strength in unity according to Engelbert Mveng (L'art d'Afrique Noire). Moreover, the Bamun recognized the shapeshifting and cyclical nature of their ancestors. Essentially, they hold to an ideal that by swatting a fly, they may be squashing the spirit of a great great great grandfather.
<p...

How can we utilize the light from our Soul (Sol/Sun) to shine (reflect) our best sides?

Shadow: The Universe is designed in a schematic of opposites. Good/Evil, Light/Dark, High/Low. It's a clever design because it navigates us. Recognize the shadows, but know their opposites are also inherent. When Lunar light bathes our awareness, it might be sign to acknowledge the darkness as a way to step into lightness. See the light in your dark nights of the soul. Keep your joy illumined. This is appropriate on a symbolic level because the Daffodil has a trumpet-like look, and so it announces the procession of spring in a bright, trumpetting manner.

Although they come in a myriad of shapes, sizes and varieties, the Daffodil has a few prime roots we can explore for symbolic structure. To wit:

Petals: There are different breeds, but tranditional Daffodils have six petals. Six is a harmonic number. In fact, Venus is the governess of the number six and conveys a sense of love. The numerical energy of six also expresses: Temperance, Calm, Truth and Balance.

Color: With innovations in growing floral hybrids and variations the Daffodil can come in many colors now, but its traditional hue is yellow. Yellow is associated with the solar plexus chakra, and therefore speaks to us about: Radiance, Centrality, Vitality...

In short, tapping into seasonal symbolism broadens our horizons.

Viewing our cycles of life through symbolic eyes transforms a myopic view into a pervasive, universal spectrum of sight.

Here's what I mean:

Winter: It's a season governed by the recluse, the hermit. Activity gives way to dormancy. Life is still, indwelling and silent. This is a time of introversion, contemplation and going within. Symbolic winter invites us to quiet the mind, still the soul, and crystallize our innerworkings. This is a time to ice skate through winter whites as a means of gaining purity and clarification.

Autumn: It's a season of transition, it embodies a culmination - it's Nature's 'last hoorah!' b...
