Starting Over

Excerpt from 'How to touch a Monk - Finding our Sacred Space within'

By SOPHIA S. PAUL, ND, Cert. Yoga Instructor, Author

How many times have you had to start over and really didn't want to? How many times did you not have another option or choice? How many times, a long time after whatever the event was did you realize that this once so dreaded change was the best thing that could have happened to you?

Having to start over is essentially being in the flow of life and embracing it. Nothing in life is permanent, that much we know. Although we have a false sense of security by believing that we can create stability and permanence, life itself shows us that we are at the mercy of change - always, if we like it or not.

How boring would our existence be if everything stayed the way it is! How could we measure happiness if there was no pain or despair? Yes, balance is what we strive for but not boredom through stagnation.

When we give ourselves permission to 'start over', we will experience an ease, a lessening of anxiety and fear. Starting over is a blessing that we need to allow into our lives. Giving up would be the opposite and where would that get us?

A wonderful way of playing with the concept of starting over is to practice it during your daily meditation. We all know how easily our minds wander. We start out with the best intention of staying focused on our breath, our mantra or whatever we chose as the object of our concentration only to awaken to the reality that once again our minds took over and led us into the usual meaningless chatter. Here is where we have to change our attitude. Instead of beating ourselves up with phrases like 'I will never be a good meditator', 'why does that always happen to me', 'I must be stupid not being able to do a simple thing like that', and on and on goes our list of really defeating ourselves, we simply start over. Letting go of self-destructive thoughts, letting go of the rant, and with a smile on our face start over. It is as simple as that.
