An Introduction to Mayan Calendar Astrology

The calendars of the Mayan culture have been catapulted into our planetary consciousness through many different media sources. One of the calendars of the Maya, which has the end date of 12/21/ 2012, has been subject of many theories as to what it predicts. My realm of expertise focuses on another calendar of the Maya: The Tzolkin. My connection with Mayan astrology, that is chronicled in my book, The Mayan Sacred Count of Days, reveals the way I came to understand the astrology calendar of the Maya.

The Tzolkin, which means 'count of days', was adapted by the Maya from the earlier Aztec, Toltec and Olmec cultures of Mesoamerica. The Maya used their own names for the 20 astrology signs that comprise this system. When a child is born to the Maya of today, the parents know what the child's personality and nature will be from the astrology sign and the accompanying number These two components can be thought of as being similar to the sun and moon signs of Western or Gregorian astrology.

Western astrology focuses on the movement of the celestial bodies within our solar system. Even though the Maya were aware of the movement of the planets in our solar system, their cosmology and mythology focuses upon what they felt was the creator of the cosmos: the Milky Way or center of our galaxy. The Maya lived at a place on the planet that enabled them to see the center of our galaxy easily. The Maya feel that the galactic center, which they call the Hu Nab Ku, is the hub of all creation. They feel that the energy that comes from this center is what is really important for people on Earth.

Mayan astrology focuses on knowing your astrology sign and number that describes the energy that came from the galactic center the day you were born. The second aspect of Mayan astrology focuses how your sign and number combine with the energy of the present day. It is a 'Be Here Now' concept. The Maya focus on the theme of the present day and how each person can interact harmoniously with each day.

The way to use the Mayan astrology system is first to discover your day sign and number. You can do that by using the calculator. Once you have discovered your basic nature, you can use the same calculator, daily if you wish, to see what day today is. Then using the Oracle of the Directions chart, you will be able to see how your day sign interacts with the day sign of today. If it is a harmonious day, such as an empowering and supportive day, then it is good to push ahead on what you want to accomplish. If it is a challenge or mystery day, then it is good to just take it easy and see what unfolds. You will find that your experiences of the day will revolve around or relate to how your day sign interacts with the day sign of the present day.

Aside from the influence of the present day, there is also the influence of the Mayan week that changes every 13 days. The day sign that is the ruler of the week influences the events of their 13 days. Each day sign is a ruler of a Mayan week once every 9 months. The Mayan astrology calendar, the Tzolkin, recycles every 9 months. Once every 9 months your day sign will rule the 13 day period, called a Trecena. That is your 'birthday' week and your most powerful time of the 9 month period.

It is good to keep track of the ruler of the Trecena, as well as the ruler of each day to optimize the 13 day period. If the ruler of the present week is an empowering or nurturing day sign for you, then you will be able to accomplish a lot during that time, if that is your desire. If the ruler of the present Trecena is a challenging day sign for you, you may be able to resolve conflicts during that time. A challenge week and a mystery/surprise week are not your strongest weeks, so best not to push ahead on major issues. These are good times to take a vacation or just flow with what is happening in your life.

Even if you are in an empowering week, you will come upon a challenging day within the week that may give you some problems. The present day and present week will combine to create experiences and situations that will be interesting to observe. Even if it is an empowering week, don't ask your bossfor a raise on a day that is challenging for you.

I will be using my blog to tell you about the week that is coming up and how each of the directions will fare during that week. The next Mayan week will be on January 2, 2012. It will be a Transformer week. If your day sign is ruled by the North or white, which are Wind, Transformer, Dog, Jaguar and Flint, it will be an empowering week. If your day sign is ruled by the East or red, it is a nurturing week for Crocodile, Serpent, Offering, Reed and Earth. If the direction of your day sign is South or yellow, as Seed, Star, Road, Wisdom and Sun, then it is a challenging week. For those born into the direction of the West or blue, Night, Deer, Monkey, Eagle and Storm, it is a Mystery/surprise week. For both the challenging and mystery weeks, it is best to go with the flow and deal with what arises.
