While moving about the TruJournal blogs, the recent post written by Richard Merrick entitled Slaying the Dragon caught my attention. It's a great read citing historical viewpoints into the phenomenon of dragons, wyrms and serpents in cultural perspective.
Richard's post combined with personal observations galvanized many of my own understandings about these much maligned, oft misunderstood creatures.
I'm completely enchanted by creatures of a silky-scaled nature. Always have been. My folks tell me I spoke to dragons as a child. I don't remember confessing this as a kid, but I do know reptilian guidance has been a constant in my spiritual evolution.
In my line of work, I observe people receiving spiritual information from what he/she identify as 'Spirit Guides' and I'm fascinated by their descriptions of these altruistic entities.
As I listen to these personal accounts, I reflect on my own 'Spirit Guides.' They are many and varied. By far, the most powerful sages in my energy are of a serpentine nature.
These sacred serpents are ancient, and experiencing their energetic presence is consuming, awing, humbling. There are three of them, and their visages are mutable. They shift from sea serpents, to medieval looking dragons, to Asian dragons, etc. I've noticed their visage morphs according to the message they need to impart.
It's a titch bizarre having serpents, wyrms and dragons as spiritual sentinels & guides. Nevertheless, their dynamic wisdom and effectiveness tends to put to rest any kind of weird complex I might have over being accompanied by dragons on my spiritual walk.
So why am I sharing this (for the first time in the public eye, no less)?
I suppose, in my own way I'm encouraging an open mind. As Richard deftly noted in his Slaying the Dragon blogpost, not everything is as it seems. There are deeper meanings, traditions, histories and insights that slither beneath the surface.
Succinctly put, it behooves us to give unconventional wisdom a chance before discounting it due to face-value judgements.
So, if you ever have a serpentine sensation sidle up to your awareness - give pause and pay attention. The wisdom imparted can be phenomenally profound.
I've written about the symbolism of serpents and dragons. You can find these thoughts here:
