The View From the Top of the Mountain is the Best
Since I was young, I have always been moved by adventurous people. Such a life of wanton flexibility was desirable because mine was so far from it. Sure I read adventure books, and I watched Battlestar Galactica and Logan's Run over and over. But unfortunately, I led a fairly mundane life. That being said, I love adventure. Most people do.
So what is an adventurous spirit? Is it quitting your job just because? Or is it, wanting to go hiking in the McDowell Mountains all the time and wearing Levi jeans and freaky sneakers rather than a dress and high heels? No. Although, an adventurous spirit will see the McDowell's and want to climb them rather than drive around them.
So what is the issue? The issue is that these days the vast majority of us want the quickest, easiest way around situations and problems in our life, rather than going through them, or over them. But the benefit of the adventurous spirit is the opportunity that a mountain or an obstacle presents and the want and desire to expand, grow and learn as a human being by pursuing these challenges. The adventurous spirit embraces challenges rather than avoiding them.
Scaling a mountain takes drive, dedication, and endurance to climb, but the reward is the view at the top. Free from the clutter, chaos, disobedience and craziness below, you can see for miles. Life, like the mountain, thus seems simpler from the top. When we grapple with our problems, we expand our horizons, have a better understanding of the world around us, and have a more complete tool belt in which to solve future challenges. To be sure, the problem doesn't seem so daunting or scary. But those lacking the adventurous spirit are unwilling to climb the mountain.
A friend asked me, "What do I do? You don't pursue any adventures - you don't climb mountains." I responded with a question - What do all great adventures have in common? He responded by informing me that every adventure had a goal. For example, in BattleStar Galactica the goal was to find Earth. In Logan's Run the Goal was to escape renewal on Carousel. The adventurous spirit needs a goal for fuel.
My goal is to qualify for the Ironman World Championships - adventure, challenges, and life altering experiences shall follow. To be sure, I will need to swim 2.4 mile, bike 112 miles and run 26.2 miles in under ten hours. Goals require a vision. You must have something you want to pursue. Most of us have buried these thoughts beneath the piles on our desks or behind the list of things we think we have to do at home. In essence - we have been jaded by our complex world. We have allowed western values of the all mighty dollar, dreams of corner offices, and shallow compliments to muddy our dreams. Fortunately, those dreams are still within us. Yes they are buried but are eagerly yearning to escape.
To be sure you will be happiest when you are actively pursuing your visions - your dreams, at that time you will feel a rush of exhilaration - that is the essence of life. When you feel the rush you will realize why you were created.
